I have some tunnel torofied RW that may be too narrow for a traditional dreadnaught. Have we ever laid three (3) piece tops where the center piece is a solid narrower piece supporting the bridge as a singular piece of wood vs a single seam in the middle. Any possible benifits or draw backs?

I saw a documentary about trees communicating not that long ago, and it absolutely does instill a reverence for the woods in use for instrument making. The big question might be how can the powers that be become convinced of the high value in appreciating these trees LIViNG, not necessarily in some sawmill being sold to the highest bidder? What? Living within the earth’s means?

The three Redwood blocks that I have are extraordinarily stiff across the grain. That stiffness makes them susceptible to splitting. In finished guitars the tone is similar to cedar but not so lush. There are metalic tendancies. Beautiful trees but give me old Spruce any day for soundboards.

I just finished a mandolin that I chose sinker redwood for the top. It is so dense, the annular rings can only be seen with magnification. The annular rings are an average distance of ten thousands of an inch. That makes an inch of width represents a hundred years of growth. It probably would not make a good guitar but it is really great for a mandolin.

I have a redwood/koala mini jumbo, and it’s extraordinary.

I am confused on rose wood is it legal to buy and sell, i live in the Philippines and we have an exotic wood supplier close to where i live , talking to him he said he would not sell rose wood

Tony was and is my favorite guitar player still. Every time I spoke to him. I felt at home. He was such a gentlemen. And so poetic with his words and where he placed them. Just like the notes he played.

As a student Luthier 1 year in & my first build is a classical guitar using European spruce top & wild cherry back & sides with cedar neck & back brace & spruce top braces in the Santos Hernandez style, I can honestly say the wood varieties are mind boggling not to mention the price's & stock piles of the top guitar manufacturers has me absolutely blown away on how to balance ⚖️ the cost with the risk involved & time investment, any suggestions or advice on what way to approach this as In building the same style & shape with different woods or building different styles with different woods to maximize learning efficiency overall?

I just finished a Redwood dreadnought and I got super bass and loud.

I was a long time resident of Monterey Bay to include several years in Aptos and a friend of Paul Hostetter. Lucky Strike.. Craig Carter RIP I moved him to Petrolia and helped set up his shop. I surfaced hundreds of sets of redwood tops in my shop in Monterey. Tunnel 13.. there is a wood hustler in So Oregon who came by his inventory by other than normal means, to be avoided. Brian Burns (sp) one of the most knowledgeable luthiers on the subject of redwood. I have a stash of pre WW II redwood from a CCC camp/mill in So Oregon. . I am fortunate.

Why?

Another analogy concerning the secret of the Stradivarius is the sound woods having been soaked in water. The mineral content within the structure of the cells is dissolved allowing the wood to resonate. Certainly more was going on which may remain an ever allusive feature of instrument making by builders. Richard Hoover is a remarkably dedicated soul that seeks to improve the world, one instrument at a time. Bravo!
